Post grad update from student affairs
On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs, I congratulate you on this tremendous accomplishment. An exciting new chapter in your life is about to begin, and we want to make sure you’re in the know about UC Davis services and memberships available to you after you graduate.
In this email, you will find information about insurance coverage after college, getting help on your job search, ARC and alumni organization memberships and more.
These last few years have been full of challenges and disruptions, and you have worked hard to get here. We in Student Affairs are proud not only of your academic achievement, but also the resilience and flexibility you’ve shown.

Getting Off to a Great Start
For a multitude of reasons, many students don’t begin their job search until after graduation.
UC Davis allows graduates the same access to career services as students—for the first year after graduation—for free, unlike many other campuses. That means that as UC Davis alumni, you can:
- Get career advising from Career Center staff (within the first year) or through the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.
- Use your unlimited access to Handshake to find a job. Pro tip: let potential employers know you’ve graduated by updating your status in your Handshake profile.
- Visit the Career Center’s website for resources including tips on exploring career options, resume writing, interviewing, searching for career positions and more!
Explore job opportunities at the Career Fair:
- April 15, 2026
- 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. PDT
- In-person at University Credit Union Center
Keep an eye out for more details and prepare for the fairs on the Career Center’s website.
Making Sure You’re Covered
Maybe you have a job lined up that will provide you with insurance, or you can stay on your parents’ plan for the time being. If that’s the case—excellent! But a large percentage of grads do not have a parent with coverage, and you may not find a job right away that provides the health insurance needed to get care.
You may qualify, though, for significant financial help that enables you to get health insurance at no cost from Medi-Cal or for as little as $1 a month through Covered California, depending on your circumstances. If you are moving out of California, every state has subsidized plans available to help you get the coverage and care that are such a crucial part of post-grad life.
Take advantage of these options for continuing health insurance and keep yourself covered.
DavisMail, Course Materials and Box
You can currently continue to access DavisMail after you graduate, but UC Davis is phasing out its Email for Life and Email Forwarding for Life services. Learn more about this transition here.
You should also download any course materials you’d like to keep from Canvas now, as well as any unofficial transcripts you may need in the future. You can still order official transcripts after graduation from the Office of the University Registrar.
To keep your Box account, be on the lookout for an email (with a valid link to box.com) asking you to change your password. This will remove you from the UC Davis instance of Box and add you to a public one.
Overview of using agentic AI
Hi everyone. On Monday, March 30, we will have a special Monday Seminar focused on the new agentic AI tools (e.g., Claude Code) that have recently become available for writing stimulus presentation programs, data analysis scripts, etc. These tools go way beyond what a chatbot like ChatGPT or Gemini can do.
Petr Janata has spent considerable time using this approach over the past year, and he will provide an overview of how these tools work, what it takes to use them well, their pros and cons, etc. Kurt Winsler has also been using this approach for the past few months and will be on hand to provide the perspective of a trainee.
This session will be at 3:30 PM in the 267 Cousteau conference room.
Here’s a basic overview that I copied from a web site about the most popular agentic AI tool, Claude Code:
What Is Claude Code?
Claude Code is essentially a specialized AI agent, or an AI system capable of completing complicated, multi-step tasks without the need for rules or human intervention. Leveraging agentic intelligence, it can read an entire codebase and understand the context behind a project on its own. It can then autonomously perform a range of tasks, including:
- Answering questions about the codebase.
- Making edits across multiple files.
- Creating and running tests.
- Addressing bugs and other errors.
- Handling complex situations like merge conflicts.
Anthropic also designed Claude Code to be user-friendly, making it available to developers in Slack, on the web, in integrated development environments and directly in terminals. This way, users don’t have to switch between different environments, and they can use their preferred command-line interface tools.
Although Claude Code was first unveiled in February 2025, it didn’t garner widespread attention right away. That’s no longer the case, thanks to the rise of a popular technique that Anthropic aims to perfect: Vibe coding.
What Is Vibe Coding, Again?
Vibe coding is when you tell an AI tool what you want to create in plain language, and then it generates the code for you. Not only does this save users from having to manually write the code, but it also gives those with non-technical backgrounds the ability to build their own coding projects.
Many tech leaders are excited about the greater accessibility this technique presents, with Meta product manager Zevi Arnovitz likening vibe coding to receiving “superpowers.” Google CEO Sundar Pichai has even claimed that the practice has made coding more “enjoyable” and “approachable,” enabling businesses to equip entire teams with skills that were once limited to experienced developers.
Anthropic seems to have recognized vibe coding’s promise as well, doubling down on improvements to Claude Code to ensure users of all coding levels can use it to complete even the most challenging tasks.
