Continuity and Discontinuity
How is early dev related to later dev?
How are chars at one point in time relted to your chars at a later point in time
Is the dev gradual and continuous or does it happen in stages
Continuous
If you can count it (height, weight, words in vocab, cells in the body)
- When the same behavior is seen at different ages, just different amount/speeds
Discontinuous
Different structures and behaviors suggest discontinuous dev
- Like stages of a butterfly (caterpilar, chrysalis, butterfly)
- Child producing first word (discontinuity, preverbal to verbal) or learning to read
Stages
Conception - Sperm fertilizing egg, 1 cell.
Birth - Body has billions of cells, a hundred billion in the brain.
A discontinuity between the two stages of development. Not only increasing cell number, but new structures are present.
3 distinct stages of prenatal development
Distinct from trimesters, those are descriptive of time not quality
Zygote (germinal stage)
1st weeks after conception (conception - 3 weeks)
Zygote (created at conception by sperm+egg) divides into multiple cells, diferent types of cells, and becomes implanted in uterine wall
Embryonic stage
3-8 weeks
Begins to develop basic structures (arm, face, etc.)
Fetus
8 weeks to birth
Organs grow and develop, eventually become able to function
At the end of period, fetus puts on fat and is born
Continuous elements of prenatal development
- Genes
- Behavior - Swallowing, breathing, etc.
