Firing:

1. Pre-synaptic cell has to have its membrane potential elevated
2. Mg2+ unblocks from NMDA
   1. For NMDA to let Ca2+ through it needs two things:
      1. Mg2+ needs to unblock opening
      2. Glutamate has to activate it to let calcium through
3. Pre-synaptic cell fires, releasing neurotransmatters (glutamate)
4. Calcium enters through NMDA, Sodium (Na+) enters through AMPA
5. There is an increase in calcium (Ca2+) concentration in the post synaptic neuron
